Rehearsal Notes

Oct. 24, 2018

Sweet Child
Great work on this tonight! We added some voices to the baritone line “Faith like a child…” and the balance really started to happen.

Amavolovolo
We almost were able to do this piece from memory! By next week, try to be comfortable enough with the text to put your binder down and sing by heart.

Banquet Fugue
Detail work on the articulation of every phrase. If you missed this rehearsal, make sure to ask a neighbour about what you missed! (and what a Sergato is 🙂

In dulci jubilo
Good review on this. Practice tracks are now up so make sure you have a solid grasp of this for next week!

Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)
We’ve now covered this entire piece, including the “oo”s at the end. We worked on unifying our sound in the unison verses and listening carefully to the exact tone colour and annunciation of all singers around you. Great job Joan and Susan on trying out the solo. Everyone is encouraged to have a look at it and give it a go some time!

In dulci jubilo
Great work on this tonight! We got through the entire piece with text. We are using a Germanic pronunciation of the Latin, so “princeps” sounds like “prin-tseps.” If you are an alto, tenor, or bass, practice your own line slowly and deliberately so that you are as comfortable with it as you were the melody.

Banquet Fugue
This is really coming together. We are starting to focus on a higher level of detail, such as the character of the piece, and articulation of each line. The tricky spots to practice are getting over the first page turn and the last two pages. Use your listening tracks to refine these this week!

Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing
Full song, details of tone and vocal production. On p. 2, sing gently into the low range.

Sweet Child
Excellent work on this tonight! We made a lot of progress solidifying transitions and singing through the full piece (Sweet Child portion only).

In dulci jubilo
We sang the melody on a neutral syllable at a good pace. Practice singing the melody in solfege in F major if you can!

Banquet Fugue
Really great progress here too! We started at the end of the piece, working each section moving backwards in the piece until we had completed detail work on each section. We are now able to run the piece. We will continue to work on confidence, balancing the parts, and getting the theatrical/character elements in place.

Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)
We learned the chorus (“Christmas… Christmas…”), and the first verse (pp. 1-6). We talked about swing rhythm (think DOO-ba DOO-ba DOO-ba), and worked on finding our chord at m. 33 from the reference of the previous note. Note that eventually, this piece will be performed from memory.

Amavolovolo
You know this piece really well. Practice singing it with the words at a variety of dynamics, so you can sing confidently at forte (loud)and also have a steady tone at a piano (soft) dynamic.
